the one thing to know this morning

The flags go up at Milton High this week. Thousands of small American flags, one for each person killed on September 11, 2001, will cover the front lawn along Birmingham Highway ahead of the school's 9/11 ceremony, which falls on the 25th anniversary this year. The ceremony is Friday, September 11, at 10 a.m., between the front steps and the lawn, and the city says anyone is welcome.

Students run it, as they have for years. Each year a handful of them tell the stories of individual victims, and the orchestra, chorus, and band play. This year's keynote is Dr. Stewart Gordon, a forensic dentist who served with the World Trade Center Mortality Identification Unit, the team that identified victims in the weeks after the towers fell. He has been a docent at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in Manhattan since 2014. Milton police and firefighters attend, and Mayor Peyton Jamison is among the speakers.

If you cannot make Friday morning, the flags are the thing to see. Drive past 13025 Birmingham Highway any day this week.

Football. Milton 53, Cambridge 21. The Eagles ran away from the Bears at home on Friday, their second straight win, and moved to 2-1. MaxPreps now has Milton at No. 4 in Georgia's Class 6A. Cambridge is 0-3 against a schedule that has not let up.

Next Friday, Milton travels to Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee, at 7, and Cambridge hosts Denmark at 7:30.

Volleyball. Milton is 19-3 after a 3-1 loss at Johns Creek on Tuesday and a 3-2 win over St. Francis on Thursday. Cambridge split four in two days, beating Parkview and Mountain View at home on Tuesday, then losing to Marist and St. Pius on Wednesday, and sits at 9-10. Milton hosts Riverwood on Wednesday at 6; Cambridge is at Lassiter on Tuesday at 5.

Softball. Cambridge is 11-2 and has outscored its last three opponents 42-3: Centennial 17-2, Chattahoochee 16-0, St. Pius 9-1. Milton lost to Lanier 11-8 on Tuesday and beat Roswell 13-4 on Thursday. Both play Tuesday: Cambridge at Sprayberry at 5:30, Milton hosts Johns Creek at 6:30.

Council Watch

what the city decided, and what it is about to

How Milton handles its trash for the next ten years is on the table Tuesday. The Sustainability Advisory Committee meets at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall to review the draft Recycling and Solid Waste Management Plan, the document meant to guide how the city collects and disposes of household garbage and recycling through the 2030s, plus sustainability goals for the city government itself.

It is a guiding document. It changes no ordinance and spends no money on its own; anything with a price tag would still go through the regular budget process, and any policy change would need its own Council vote. Staff will also brief the committee on the September 26 Household Hazardous Waste collection at Cambridge High and a possible grant. The committee's next meeting after this one is October 13.

Council meets Wednesday this week. The regular meeting is Wednesday, September 9, at 6 p.m. at City Hall, rather than its usual Monday. The FY27 budget, which has had three public presentations, is due for its final vote later this month.

Also Wednesday: the preliminary hearing in the camera-glasses case we have been following (case 26PI006476, Judge Todd Ashley). Thursday's issue will have what happened.

Milton Weekend

the two or three things worth planning around

Today, plan around the heat. The National Weather Service has a heat advisory up for Milton and much of north Georgia until 8 p.m. Sunday, with the heat index reaching 106. The guidance is the ordinary kind and worth repeating on a holiday weekend: fluids, shade, air conditioning, and a look in on the neighbors who may not have it.

Tomorrow is Labor Day. Fulton County libraries are closed, there are no city meetings, and the pools have their last real weekend of the season.

Next Saturday, September 12, stacks up three. Touch-a-Truck runs 10 to 1 at Stonecreek Church, free, and it is exactly what it sounds like. The Happy Soul Sisters Fall Sip & Shop is 10 to 4 at 13000 Deerfield Parkway.

And Grilling & Gridiron, Lionheart's tailgate, takes over the lot behind Truck & Tap in downtown Alpharetta from noon to 7:30. Getting in is free and they want you to bring a chair. Georgia and Western Kentucky are on at 12:45, Alabama and Kentucky at 3:30, and Tech hosts Tennessee at 7, so you can do both. The Bailey Croom Band plays, there is a bar, and eating is a $35 tasting wristband, all you can eat while the tents run, noon to 3. Kids under 8 eat free.

They need pitmasters. The barbecue contest is free to enter and they are short on entrants. Pick "Pitmaster applicant" on the ticket form and Lionheart will follow up with the details. It benefits Lionheart Life Center, whose school serves children with challenges of relating and communicating.

Further out: Crabapple Fest is October 3 with more than 100 vendors, and registration is open for the new Kids Market at Christmas in Crabapple, where 5-to-17-year-olds sell what they made to a crowd the city puts around 1,500. That is Saturday, December 5, 2 to 6 p.m., and the tables along Broadwell Road are limited.
