the one thing to know this morning

Wednesday is your say on next year's budget. Milton's Fiscal Year 2027 budget gets its first presentation and its public hearing at the same Council meeting on Wednesday, September 9, at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. The budget takes effect October 1, and the adoption vote is expected at the September 21 meeting. Wednesday is the part where residents speak.

Deputy City Manager Bernadette Harvill has presented the draft three times since July. She has flagged three things that could still move the numbers: the millage rate, which gets its own hearings and depends on a Fulton County tax digest that is not final; whether voters approve another round of TSPLOST in November; and a pay study comparing city salaries with neighboring jurisdictions.

The same meeting takes a public hearing on amendments to the current year's budget, the one that ends September 30. Both are first presentations, so Wednesday is comment, not the vote.

Also on Wednesday's agenda, and worth knowing about.

  • →The District at Mayfield. Staff present a concept plan for realigning Mid Broadwell Road for the project. A presentation, not a vote.
  • →The comprehensive plan. Council discusses the working draft of Milton's five-year update, the document that guides what gets built where.
  • →Another roundabout. A property owner waiver tied to a replacement driveway at 565 Cox Road, for the Cox Road at King Road roundabout project.
  • →Providence Lake Drive. Two items on the culvert replacement: a design change order with Garver, and survey work for right-of-way acquisition.
  • →Forsyth County. An intergovernmental agreement covering maintenance and control of stretches of McGinnis Ferry Road, Morris Road and Bethany Bend.
  • →Crabapple Fest groundwork. A license to use Lecoma Trace as event space, and an agreement for the children's inflatables. The festival is October 3.
  • →Birmingham Park. Subdivision plats on city property.
  • →Public safety buildings. Painting and fence repair at the Public Safety Complex, flooring at Fire Station 44, and signs at Fire Station 41.

The mayor will also read proclamations for IT Professionals Day and Suicide Prevention Week.

Tonight, before that: the Sustainability Advisory Committee meets at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers to review the draft Recycling and Solid Waste Management Plan, the ten-year guide to how the city handles garbage and recycling. It is a guiding document; it changes no ordinance and spends nothing on its own.

And Wednesday brings the preliminary hearing in the camera-glasses case we have followed since June, before Judge Todd Ashley. Thursday's issue will have what happened.

Friday. Milton travels to Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee, at 7. Cambridge hosts Denmark at 7:30, looking for its first win.

The Eagles are 2-1, and MaxPreps has them No. 10 in Georgia and No. 5 in Class 6A. Cambridge is 0-3.

Before then. Milton volleyball hosts Riverwood Wednesday at 6, then plays Blessed Trinity and North Cobb Thursday. Cambridge is at Lassiter tonight and hosts North Springs Thursday.

Softball. Milton hosts Johns Creek tonight at 6:30, then Cherokee Wednesday and Gainesville Thursday. Cambridge is at Sprayberry tonight, South Forsyth Wednesday, and hosts Marist Thursday.

Milton Weekend

Friday is the 25th anniversary of September 11. Milton High's ceremony is at 10 a.m. between the front steps and the lawn at 13025 Birmingham Highway, and the city says anyone is welcome. Students tell the stories of individual victims, the orchestra, chorus and band play, and this year's keynote is Dr. Stewart Gordon, who served with the World Trade Center Mortality Identification Unit. The flags go up on the lawn before it. If you cannot make the morning, drive past.

Friday evening there is live music at Six Bridges in Crabapple at 6.

Saturday stacks up three. Touch-a-Truck runs 10 to 1 at Stonecreek Church, free. The Happy Soul Sisters Fall Sip & Shop is 10 to 4 at 13000 Deerfield Parkway. And Grilling & Gridiron, Lionheart's tailgate, takes over the lot behind Truck & Tap in downtown Alpharetta from noon to 7:30. Entry is free, bring a chair, and eating is a $35 tasting wristband while the tents run, noon to 3. Kids under 8 eat free. They are still short on barbecue entrants; pick "Pitmaster applicant" on the ticket form.

Saturday evening has two. Sips and Songs at Six Bridges at 6, and at 8 the Atlanta band Slow Parade plays Matilda's Music Under the Pines on Hickory Flat Road, which is a Milton venue despite what the Alpharetta listings say. Roots and blues and country. It is an outdoor room and regulars bring a picnic and a lawn chair.
