Mondays are for fire trucks at Camp Joyful Soles

Every Monday this summer, a fire engine pulls into Camp Joyful Soles. Tuesdays, it is the police. The city's seven-week parks and rec camp for young people ages 13 to 22 with mild to moderate disabilities builds its weeks around visits like these: 35 campers trying on turnout gear, pulling the hose (with a firefighter's help when they want it), and lately, sitting behind the wheel of the truck.

Camp manager Brooke Nolan, ten years in, says the visits are about comfort as much as fun: "I think it's good for them to have interactions with first responders outside of an emergency."
