Fulton County Schools set a district-wide goal this past school year: 10 million logged minutes of student reading, tracked in the Beanstack app, with badges and prizes along the way. By the time the year wrapped, students had blown past it with 11,126,597 minutes.

The incentives were world class. At one elementary school, the principal and two assistant principals dressed as leprechauns and danced at morning drop-off. And at Cambridge High School, media specialist Laura Morgan stocked an arcade claw machine with prizes for students who joined the challenge.

The district says the goal behind the goal was helping students “find joy in reading.” Eleven million minutes says it landed.
