When Milton became a city

Milton incorporated as a city on December 1, 2006, formed from the northwest corner of unincorporated Fulton County. The name honors John Milton, a Revolutionary War officer and Georgia's first Secretary of State, the same namesake as the historic Milton County, which existed from 1857 until it merged into Fulton County in 1932. Today's city covers roughly the same north-Fulton countryside that was once Milton County's heart.

What Milton is

Milton is a city of about 41,300 people (41,296 in the 2020 census) in north Fulton County, Georgia, about 30 miles north of Atlanta. It borders Alpharetta and Roswell to the south and east and the Cherokee and Forsyth county lines to the west and north. Milton is known for its horse farms, gravel roads, and deliberately rural character, the city's planning identity is keeping that countryside feel while the metro grows around it.

How Milton's government works

Milton uses a council-manager form of government. Residents elect a mayor and six councilmembers who set policy; an appointed city manager, Steve Krokoff, in the role since 2016, runs day-to-day operations as the city's chief administrator. Police and fire

Milton runs its own public safety departments. The Milton Police Department has been led by Chief Jason Griffin since December 2023, the first chief promoted from within the department. Milton Fire-Rescue is led by Fire Chief Gabe Benmoussa. Both are headquartered through the city's Public Safety Complex on Highway 9.

Schools

Milton is served by the Fulton County Schools system. The public high schools serving the city are Milton High School and Cambridge High School, fed by Northwestern and Hopewell middle schools and a set of neighborhood elementaries. School attendance zones are drawn by the district, not the city.

Milton Restaurant Week 2026

Milton Restaurant Week 2026 runs Monday, September 14 through Sunday, September 20. It is a city-supported celebration of Milton's dining scene: participating restaurants offer specially curated prix-fixe menus, typically three courses at a promotional price, for breakfast, lunch, or dinner depending on the spot. The 2026 lineup is published: fifteen restaurants so far, with set menus from $25 to $55 per person, and the city is still accepting applications so the list can grow.
