The plan deciding which Milton roads get money closes Sunday

Top of Mind

The plan that decides which Milton roads get money is taking comments through Sunday. The North Fulton Comprehensive Transportation Plan is a regional effort, developed with the Atlanta Regional Commission by Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell, and Sandy Springs, and it does something very local: it sets which road projects get in line for local, state, and federal money.

Here is why this week matters. The plan has not proposed anything yet. This is the first round of public input, the one that happens before the planners decide what the problems are. There is a second comment window in early 2027, but by then the draft recommendations will exist and the framing will be set. What you say now shapes which things get called problems. What you say next year only shapes the answers to problems somebody else already chose.

Some of the network sits outside the city line, and we will say that plainly rather than pretend otherwise. But if you drive Freemanville, Birmingham Highway, Bethany Bend, or Hopewell, or you cross Medlock Bridge Road on a school run, this plan is about your mornings. The project held a virtual open house Wednesday evening; the survey stays open through Sunday, August 31.

And if walking and biking is your issue, there is a second door today: Milton's Trails Advisory Committee meets this afternoon at 4:45 PM at City Hall, and the public is invited. The regional plan covers trails too. Two chances to say how you get around town, three days apart.

Free health checks at City Hall

Milton Fire-Rescue resumed its Fire CARES wellness checks Tuesday: free, walk-in health checks at Community Place on the City Hall grounds, 2006 Heritage Walk. Fire-rescue personnel, including registered nurse Derek Hoffman, run blood pressure and glucose screenings, EKGs, minor wound care, and a general once-over.

Missed Tuesday? The next ones are October 14, November 11, and December 9, 11 AM to 1 PM, no appointment or registration needed. The program, Milton Fire CARES, also does scheduled home wellness visits (770-686-0948) and free CPR and Stop the Bleed classes.

The Drive

The new traffic signal at Crabapple Road and Green Road is fully operational, the city said Tuesday. New light, new habits: eyes up, and a working signal still needs an alert driver.

Also: GA 400 southbound at Haynes Bridge has two right lanes blocked for construction. Plan accordingly if you are heading south.

The Scoreboard

A rough week for Milton softball. Cambridge won Tuesday's crosstown game 13-0 at Milton, and St. Francis edged the Eagles 7-6 on Wednesday. Milton sits at 4-6; next up is a Saturday morning trip to Denmark.

One bright spot from the football side: kicker Ryan Jung was ruled eligible by the GHSA, closing the question that hung over the season opener. Friday night, Milton (1-0) visits Blessed Trinity at 7:30. Scores land on our sports page as they post.
